About Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen

Founded in 1980, Loaves & Fishes began with a simple meal of bread and fish for 11 adults and 15 children.

We Provide: Meals at no cost, Monday through Friday at Goodwill Industries and San Jose Vietnamese Seventh Day Adventist Church, targeting low-income families, disadvantaged individuals with a special concern for children, families, seniors, veterans, students, disabled, and the homeless.  In addition, we partner with 79 nonprofit agencies from as far South as Gilroy to as far North as Palo Alto to provide free hot meals to their guests.

Loaves & Fishes has embraced an extended partnership  model. We operate two centralized kitchens in Morgan Hill at the cost of $1 rent per year plus utilities. Our fleet of trucks including three specialized hot/cold temperature controlled delivery trucks and three refrigerated trucks that allow us to deliver an average of 25,000 meals per week across the Bay Area in a sixty mile radius from Gilroy to Palo Alto.

I just got back from volunteering here and I had a great time! Right when I came in, i signed a few papers and went straight to work. There were about 10 other volunteers there and we prepared the food, served it, and cleaned up afterward. I was in charge of serving soup! The patrons who came in were very grateful and were smiling ear to ear. It's such a wonderful organization. There are a few regulars that volunteer there so they know exactly what to do and can guide you through if it's your first time. They have so much to give to the community and I was glad to be a part of it. If you're interested in volunteering, it's really easy!

Volunteering is pretty simple, from setting up the hall, to food prep and actual serving. A little bit of work to set up, but rewarding in the end. The people who come in are always grateful and friendly, just as much like as the workers and the people in charge. The people in charge of the kitchen and program are great and informative, there are always regular volunteers as well who are always willing to help new volunteers out! I've volunteered with L&F a couple of times and thoroughly enjoyed it every time! :-)

It's a good way to give back to the community.

Volunteering in the Loaves and Fishes kitchen and dining hall was the highlight of my week. Hyru runs a tight ship. The food and service were high quality and the diners were treated with compassion and respect.
