About Food bank of Contra Costa & Solano

1 in 9 residents turn to the Food Bank.

We distribute food directly to low-income people at community sites and make food available for other nonprofit organizations serving the ill, needy and infants.

24 million pounds of food was distributed last year. More than half of that was fresh fruits and vegetables.

The Food Bank has developed programs that provide food to meet the demand as well as support the nutritional needs of the people we serve.

1 in 4 emergency food recipients are children.

Programs including Food for Children, Farm 2 Kids, and the School Pantry Program operate throughout the year to help alleviate childhood hunger.

Special Events Assistant

Working at the Food Bank is one of the most rewarding employment opportunities I have had. The idea of making a difference in the lives of those needing the "bread of life" is amazing. The people who work here are dedicated to their mission to end hunger in the community. My work, in assisting the Special Events Manager, is to help ensure that our fundraising and promotional events are well designed and run smoothly. I am assigned to customer and benefactor contact, as well as working with both inside and outside support contacts. My immediate supervisor is passionate about her job, which is easily contagious. The hardest part of the job is that there are seemingly not enough hours in the day to accomplish as much as we would like. But, we continue to push the envelope, hoping to make a difference each day!

Part Time Former Employee

I worked part to full time assisting the Special Events Manager of the Food Bank on a temperary basis. As a volunteer I had already worked with many people on staff and enjoyed being in their environment for a change. It was demanding but enjoyable work and my previous experience helped to bring some new ideas to their world. I also learned some ideas and new processes from them.

Student Volunteer

A typical day at work included working with several other volunteers to sort out expired food products from the good food products. There were a few stations each used to carry out a specific function. The workplace culture was friendly as the volunteers had conversations resulting in friendships at the end of a shift. What I learned was how much effort was put into stocking canned goods for those who need it. There are criteria such as expiration year, foreign labeling, type of packaging, and form of stocking that go into the whole process.

I love volunteering at the Food Bank. Our driver/manager is very dedicated to his job and is very conscientious of the amount of food he has and tries to serve every single family or individual. No kid you go hungry. Our driver has pamphlets and flyers of special events that the Food Bank is hosting in Spanish and English. Pamphlets have recipes and different ways on cooking the produce to help them get the best nutrition possible out of the produce we distribute.

Volunteer Work

Packaging vegetables or fruits are the main objectives of volunteering at Food Bank. It is easy because that is all you do. The people are very friendly and considerate. They expect you to determine whether the fruit or vegetable is rotten and separate it from the fresh ones.
